Dedicated to the memory of Peter Forster

Peter Forster was an artist, printmaker and wood engraver. He was one of the first to use colour in wood engraving. The Folio Society gave him the opportunity to do some of his best illustrating. He designed the 2005 £2 coin commemorating the Gunpowder Plot and came third in the redesign of the national coinage. Peter loved the countryside particularly the Malvern Hills and around Wells Cathedral but he never wanted to live outside London. Bicycling was his preferred transport and he enjoyed taking the train to somewhere and then cycling about visiting churches and National Trust properties for a few days. The natural world fascinated Peter. A blackbird's song could reduce him to tears of joy and butterflies (and moths) were a passion. Poetry and drama were major interests and he was learning Larkin poems until he was too tired to concentrate. Shakespeare underpinned his life and he spent many happy hours in theatres and particularly the Globe. Music was an early love. Wagner, Bach, and Beethoven were central to his life. He enjoyed jazz and blues and the recordings of his friend Philip Chaffin. Books featured large in every day - usually he had 2 or 3 on the go. Jane Austen and James Joyce were favourites (although he never achieved Finnegan's Wake). He planned reading War and Peace for the fourth time but time ran out. Oscar Wilde was a major interest and he did many illustrations about Wilde. Detective novels he enjoyed and he was read Scoop in his last days Peter was a film buff and spent many hours at the NFT. Correspondence and chatting to friends were happy aspects of every day for Peter.
